Christmas

  Picture this… Going to the living room, coffee (or hot chocolate) ready, the Christmas tree turned on, music playing,  presents under the tree, everyone in matching pj’s, feeling chilly outside. 


It can be hard when we break into reality. It can feel like we’ve been let down because things aren’t the way we pictured in our minds. This Christmas season looks a lot different from what I pictured. This has been something that has been weighing on me recently as Christmas gets closer because it just doesn’t feel like Christmas to me. 


I’ve said so many times, “It doesn’t feel like Christmas, it doesn’t feel like Christmas.” that now, it really doesn’t. I have convinced myself that it just doesn’t feel like Christmas. It’s hard to convince ourselves out of something after we have already made our minds up that it was going to be a certain way.


I found myself saying to God, “Everything is different this year, I just can’t get into the Christmas spirit. It doesn’t feel like Christmas.” He really answered me in the simplest way. You have to stop basing Christmas on things that are always changing. The weather is constantly changing, families are always changing and growing, the newest style is always changing, so when I started to associate these things with what Christmas was, I began to lose sight of Who it is about.

One thing that God has revealed to me many times this year is that He doesn’t change. Nothing about Him changes. He again reminded me that because Christmas is about Him, it doesn’t change based on the circumstances of the world. It didn’t feel like I was approaching Christmas because I wasn’t focusing on the right thing. Christmas isn’t about what we’re wearing, or if it snows, or how many people we can see, it is about the birth of Jesus. And when I lost sight of that, I lost sight of what Christmas is really about. 

 

The same night that I was scrolling through social media and I saw a post about a star. The planets are aligning in a certain way that it looks like one big planet. The only other time that this happened was when Jesus was born. He was born to bring light to this world. It was just such a good reminder to me that things may look different, but He is still the same. He doesn’t change. He never has and He never will.

Surrender

      Something that the Lord has placed on my heart recently is the idea of surrendering. What does it look like to truly surrender it all to the Lord?     The first thing that I think of when I think of surrender is the act of opening my closed fists. So often in life, I find myself holding onto things that the Lord blesses me with or brings into my life with my fists closed tightly around them. While this isn't always bad, it leaves no room for God to be able to work and move through those things. Another thing about the posture of closed hands is that we can't receive anything when our hands are closed. The devil loves to get us to hold on so tightly to the things of the world and convince us that they are God's best for us; when in reality they're far from it. When I live my life in a posture of open hands, I am allowing the Lord to place things in my life that He wants there, and I'm allowing Him to move and work through them.     Something else ...

Comparison

  “Admire someone else’s beauty without questioning your own.” How often do we compare ourselves to other people, to their accomplishments and their appearance?  Comparison will kill every relationship you have, if you let it. It tears apart people every single day. We think that by comparing, we can become a better version of ourselves, but really we are becoming a lesser version of someone else. With that, we also become a lesser version of ourselves. We can spend our whole lives trying to be like someone, but we never will be because we were not made to be.  I was listening to this sermon and it was focusing on the creation story. How God created the ocean and said that it was good, He created the sun and said that it was good, and He created mankind and said that it was good. Nothing was made lesser than, all was made good.
