God and Science Pt. 1

This new sermon series is all about science. There are a lot of different views and opinions about science in the Christian community, which is why I think it's important to look at it from a Biblical standpoint. From the start, I want to make it clear that I'm not telling you what you should and shouldn't believe, but I am showing you the truth in the Word of God.

The culture that we are living in has this idea that we can either believe in God or believe in science. God is the creator of science, which is why I think this idea is the total opposite of what is true. Science isn't something that should be bringing us farther away from God, but closer. Just like people can and have altered the Bible, people can and have altered science. Without God, how are we supposed to understand science? We can't fully grasp and wrap our heads around creation without God, and this is why it's been altered. Altered to the human mind, when the mind of an extraordinary God created it. No wonder we can't fully understand science, but because of God, we can see a glimpse of his beauty through His creation.

The first thing I want to look at with science is creation. I know you might be thinking about science and creation, how does that go together? Let's take a look at the creation of mankind.

"Then God said, 'Let us make mankind in our image in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.' So, God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them." - Genesis 1:26-27

"Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being." - Genesis 2:7

I think it is so amazing when we look at the story of creation through a Biblical lens, it puts into perspective how big our God is and how small we are. This isn't a bad thing, but what it does allow us to do is see how much He cared, that He would design us into His perfect creation although we are imperfect.

When God created the things in this world, He said the same thing about all of them, that they were good. Nothing was just okay, less than or average, everything was good, including mankind. The first step in understanding creation is not to compare creation. It's so easy for us to look at the stars and the galaxies and believe that they are good, but it is much harder for us to believe that for ourselves.

I heard a quote once that said this about comparison, "At some point along the way, I thought that the original artist wasn't good enough. When I compared his works to the standard of beauty which the world is showing me, I thought that the original artist wasn't good enough. It wasn't cool enough; it wasn't what I wanted. So, I traded the original design for something that was a copy."

Don't live your life trying to merely be a copy of someone else. It is so important that we don't compare creation because then it causes us to not fully appreciate our existence. When you think about the big picture, it is so amazing that God would write us into this incredible story, but we miss out on that when we are too busy comparing creation.

I want to show you a really cool part of creation. There is a protein that makes up our skin and it is called laminin. I know most of you have never heard of that before, but it is a protein that quite literally holds your skin together. It is the glue and without it, we would have no skin, which means we would not be able to live. Here is a picture of the protein laminin.

If you look at the protein, it is in the shape of a cross. I think that this is a beautiful picture of the gospel. This doesn't prove that God is real, but it can be used to confirm God's word, that He is what holds us together.

Colossians 1:16-17 says this, "For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones of powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together."

I hope that you've had the chance to think and reflect on how important you are to God's design. The next few parts of this series are focused on the stars, galaxies, and the moon, but I thought that it was important to start out with the creation of you and me. It is amazing to see that God has a purpose for each of his creations, we just have to be open to receiving it!
